The town of Bath in Somerset gets its name from the Roman Baths. From 43 AD, the Romans living in Britannia began to build bathhouses around the hot springs found here. Most of these buildings are outstandingly well preserved and can still be visited today. In the middle of downtown Bath, the old baths are well below street level, bypassing magnificent 19th-century buildings.
